Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy (Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy) is a common pain-relief treatment used by Podiatrists to treat chronic and painful musculoskeletal conditions that have been present for 6 months or more. This treatment is used in cases where stretching, icing, footwear modification, strapping or orthoses have not relieved your issue.

How shockwave evolved into medicine

Shock wave therapy of muscles is a new method for the treatment of muscular disorders. It has resulted from scientific developments in the last 30 yrs on understanding the origin or nerve pain and research on shock wave therapy treatment.

Originally developed for the mechanical destruction of kidney stones, shockwave therapy has now been found to regenerate treatment in bone healing disorders. In the medium to low energy range, they can treat tendon conditions, skin lesions and recently muscular disorders. They are used by orthopaedists and pain therapists to treat pain and functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system. It can also be referred to as “trigger point shock wave therapy” because the shock wave can trigger the referred pain.

What are shock waves?

A shockwave is an acoustic wave which carries high energy to painful spots and myoskeletal tissues with subacute, subchronic and chronic conditions. The energy promotes regeneration and reparative processes of the bones, tendons and other soft tissues.

Physical effects of shock waves

At low energy (the ones we use at My Podiatry) shock waves can trigger cell stimulation & regeneration, treat pain therapy and non-unions.

Who can experience shock wave?

Shockwave therapy Melbourne is suitable for patients of any age. We don’t advise children under 7, as they don’t understand the therapy and may be frightened to cooperate.

Treatment Frequency?

This depends on your type of pain; acute, dysfunctional pain responds well to 2-3 sessions per week, Chronic conditions need to be treated at longer intervals (once a week) from 4 to 6 treatments, depending on the initial injury.
