Swollen ankles and feet are common and usually not cause for concern, particularly if you have been walking or standing a lot. However, feet and ankles that remain swollen for an extended period of time, accompanied by other symptoms, can signal serious health concerns.

Injury to the foot or ankle can lead to swelling, the most common of which is a sprained ankle that results from ligaments supporting the ankle become stretched beyond their normal range. In order to reduce swelling, rest, ice, compression and elevation of the affected limb is suggested.
